Besides supportive care, treatment includes administration of anti-toxin and antibiotics (Azithromycin or Penicillin). Furthermore, since the beginning of 2025 and as of early November 2025, eight Member States in the WHO African Region (Algeria, Chad, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, and South Africa) have reported a total of 20,412 suspected cases of this disease, including 1,252 deaths. Most cases are among children and young adults. Many of the affected countries are conflict-affected or have overstretched health systems. These settings have low rimmunization coverage and crowded living conditions, especially among displaced populations.
